Five Questions With Kate Lynn

I recently had a chat via email with Alberta artist, Kate Lynn. Although she is young, she is certainly someone to keep an eye on, as she is already not only singing, but writing her own songs at the age of 12. Give our Five Questions With segment a read, and you’ll be all caught up on all things Kate Lynn!

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

Hi everyone, I’m Kate Lynn and I am 12 soon to be 13 in September. So close. I am in grade 7 and my love is all things music and my friends, especially friends who are into music and also friends who would just listen to music.

I just wanted to give you a heads up that these five answers were written with help from my Dad who is also my biggest fan. He’s also my secretary, my driver, my sushi chef (oh, did I mention that I would work for sushi?).

Anyways, my parents say that I started singing before I could talk. I started taking piano lessons at age 5 and picked up the guitar and ukulele at age 10 where I wrote my first two songs. In the last two years, I have performed at open mics, senior homes, Calgary festivals, and as a guest performer for singing competitions.  At one of these functions, I met Alex from The Layer Management and he graciously signed me and introduced me to my current producer Adam Gill and right away we were in the studio working on my first EP.

Adam said that only 5% of all artists out there have experienced the full music making cycle from song writing to pre-production to production and recording, mixing and mastering a full EP. For this, I feel very grateful because I have learned so much in such a short period of time and I also wanted to say I love working with these music loving people at Parkhill Studio (Parkhill Powers). The EP took a year and a half to complete and my first single “Sunlight” was released in December. Currently I meet up with Adam once a week to learn and work on new music and hope to release an EP every two years.

Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.

At my age, I can only really write about the future, so I focus on things that are fun and about what I hope to achieve in life. My first single, “Sunlight” is an up-beat song, with a folk country style to it. I really like writing in this genre and focusing on positivity.

My upcoming EP is pretty diverse. My producer and I experimented with different styles of music and themes that ranged from cinematic ballads to the upbeat stuff like “Sunlight”. I don’t really get too deep in my lyrics, I mean, I can’t talk about love and love lost because I haven’t experienced it yet and it seems that 95% of the music out there is about love and love lost. Funny stuff!

Currently, I am working on two songs called ‘I Remembered’ and ‘This Isn’t Goodbye’.  These songs are about my grampa LoLo who just passed recently and I missed him very much. Another song I am working on is about loneliness and how it is like a season, and seasons, they come and go.

Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?

We are in the early stages of planning my EP Release party. It will be a small intimate concert with invites of some key industry people. Hopefully, everyone will have a good time. I would describe my live performance as a fun place to be. I usually start slow with a solo on the piano making you all teary and once you’re all settled in, I blast you with flashing lights and lots of movement to get you dancing. I want you leaving the concert on a high note.

If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?

I would suggest listening to my first single “Sunlight”. “Sunlight” is song about love and friendship with someone who you never want to leave your side because they make you happy when they are around. They make you forget all your problems because they just seem to make your day brighter. Overall, the song is upbeat and fun and it should brighten your day!

Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?

Recently I’ve been listening a lot to the late Leonard cohen Cohen. His song writing skills are amazing. It’s so incredibly moving the way he tells a story though his songs. I’m also listening to Elise and Emmalyn Estrada  out of Vancouver, they are really talented people.  Locally, I like Brett McCarty and Cubic out of Calgary.
