Five Questions With Strongman

Today marks the release of Canadian bluesman, Strongman‘s new single, “No Time Like Now” and we wanted to find out a bit more about this award-winning artist, so here is a Five Questions With segment!

First off, care to introduce yourself to the Canadian Beats readers?

I’m Steve Strongman, a blues-based artist living in Hamilton, Ontario. I play guitar, sing and write songs — I’ve released five albums, the most current being No Time Like Now, set for release March 2017.

Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.

I love many different styles of music, and that comes out in my writing style. I don’t like to put any parameters on music — if it’s good and moves me emotionally, then I like it.  I hope that’s what people get from my music: honesty and emotion.  When I’m writing, I just try and stay out of the way of the song, and let things come naturally, though sometimes that’s easier said than done. The writing process is always different for me. Sometimes a song can take 20 minutes, other times it isn’t just right, then resurfaces after a few years.

Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?

Yes, lots of live shows coming up. Live performance is the cornerstone of what I do.  I feel very comfortable on stage. An honest connection and interaction with a live audience is what every performer tries to achieve. I get very excited playing live, and I think people can feel it.

If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?

It’s hard to focus on one track after many releases, but the new single “No Time Like Now” sums up where I’m at right now. I’m very excited with the way it turned out and can’t wait for people to hear it.

Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?

There’s so much great Canadian music to choose from! Current faves are Bahamas and Terra Lightfoot to name a few…but I still love going back and listening to King Biscuit Boy, Crowbar and Daniel Lanois.
