We recently had the chance to ask M’GOO a series of questions for our Five Questions With segment, find out more about him below through his answers, and videos!
Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
M’GOO is a collective of Canadian jazzster’s who met in Montreal in the early 00s in music school. We write music inspired by moments from true stories about the lessons of love. We pull influences from various genres in order tap in and communicate that moment in the story. We combine music, video, poetry, and podcasts to form a conversation around the deeper meanings of these life experiences.
Here is a video describing M’GOO:
Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.
We are all jazz trained but we tap into various genres in order to develop that moment in a story we are trying to take the listener to. So there is some pop in there, with a little jazz, rock, grunge, Brazilian music etc. The key thing for us is intimacy to the music. We wanted to have a live sound, and make the listener feel like they were in close proximity to the music and playing. There is a lot of improvisation going on – and we wanted to capture that. We write heavily based on moods, storylines, themes and so on – and that inspires how we improvise. Our tracks are conceptualized beforehand – but we tend to play and record them within 5 hours – mainly to capture the moment we are after.
Here is a video describing our music and writing style:
Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?
Our live performances are a combination of music, poetry, local storytelling, visuals etc., all around the lessons of love – and how those experiences shape our lives. Hopefully through these stories, our audience can have some self-reflection on their personal experience, and connect with other people’s experiences. We are currently putting together some shows for Montreal and Toronto for April time in 2017.
If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?
Our new single, “I didn’t want to hear you say, “I’m leaving”, is inspired from a true story of love and being abandoned by the person you love (from Glynn Washington and Snap Judgment). Its set with the character, after his girlfriend left him, taking a walk in a park trying to make sense of his emotions – and how to balance anger and gratitude.
Here is a video that explains the content more:
Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favorite Canadian bands/ artists?
Canadian music is so rich with heritage…! We’ve been inspired from the likes Neil Young, Barenaked Ladies, Joni Mitchel, Tragically Hip, Daniel Lanois, Gordon Lightfood, Robbie Robertson, Jean-Pierre Ferland – just for starters. These days though, how can you not be consumed with the genius of the Weeknd? But we also love the Montreal music scene with folks like Barr Brothers, The Dears, Wolf Parade etc.. If its one constant with the Montreal sound – its authenticity – and that’s hard to find these days. We’ve been shaped by that – and hopefully we can be considered part of it.
