Show Review – PUP

Toronto based band PUP have taken over the Danforth Music Hall to bring fans an unbelievable, epic three nights of madness and punk rock. Joining them were solo acoustic act Chris Cresswell (of The Flatliners) and Worcester based rock band The Hotelier

It’s not every day that you see a one man acoustic act opening for a punk rock band like PUP, but Chris Cresswell didn’t let that stop him as he brought his smooth vocals, captivating melodies, and witty stage banter to the stage. With nothing but his voice and a guitar, Cresswell effortlessly grabbed the crowd’s attention, connecting with the audience in a memorable way. With crooning vocals that soar over minimalistic, yet mesmerizing melodies and emotion laden lyrics, his set was a perfect start to the evening.

The Hotelier kicked it up a notch with driving tunes, quick tempos, and electrifying stage presence. What stood out about this band throughout the whole set was the way each song was crafted with skillful musicianship and thought. Featuring tunes with multiple themes and patterns, The Hotelier proved that they have mastered the art of creating a journey through their music.

As soon as PUP hit the stage it felt like getting punched in the face, in a good way (although I did almost get kicked in the face by a crowd surfer, so that’s gotta count for something). The crowd immediately erupted into loud cheers and crowd surfing as the band began the set with some of their latest singles. If I wasn’t taking photos with an expensive camera in hand, I would have probably joined them. From the anthemic chanting of “If This Tour Doesn’t Kill You, I Will” into the fast-paced nature of “DVP,” PUP know how to get the party started right away.

Another memorable tune from the show included the progressive, larger-than-life “Yukon” from their 2014 self titled album. I’m pretty sure witnessing this song live has changed my life. Featuring a gripping melody, raw energy, and explosive guitar solos the song takes a number of twists and turns that showcase PUP’s talent for weaving themes into their music. The night ended on a high note as Liam Cormier from Cancer Bats joined PUP on stage for their encore, which was a cover of the Beastie Boys’ “Sabotage” that had the crowd moshing and dancing along one last time.
