Canadian Beats Passport – Show Review – Nick Carter, The New Electric & Dan Talevski

Artists: Nick Carter, The New Electric & Dan Talevski
Venue: Cowboys Dance Hall, Calgary
Date: November 18, 2016

Ever wonder what a country bar looks like when hundreds of pop fans emerge through the doors? Well Friday night at Calgary’s legendary Cowboys DanceHall would have been the place to be. The highly anticipated line up included pop music’s newest Canadian heartthrob Dan Talevski, Calgary’s very own The New Electric and none other than pop icon Nick Carter from the Backstreet Boys.

Dan Talevski got the party started with his catchy pop beats like “Knock me off my Feet” and “Rocket”. The singer got his start making videos on YouTube, and has since worked with Timbaland, Tyler Shaw and Will.i.am to name a few. Dan was also nominated for a Much Music Award this year for Best New Canadian Artist. The Ontario native had the place on their feet in no time.

Next on stage was Calgary’s own (and very proud to say so) The New Electric. The band has just recently released their debut EP “Living Loud” and are undeniably a local favourite. The crowd was packed full of dedicated and excited fans, as well as friends and family of the band. They performed their hits like “Ride This Feeling” and “Life’s What You Make It” with more than a few happy faces singing the lyrics back word for word. Watching The New Electric on stage it’s very apparent how they won a YYC award for Group of the Year this past September, and they are only destined for more greatness. So from all of us Calgarians, You’re Welcome Canada! Enjoy! 😉

It is only fitting that my first contribution to our newest feature, Canadian Beats Passport features 1/5th of the Backstreet Boys. As a long time Backstreet Boy lover, and maybe even occasional self proclaimed backup dancer for the pop group of our generation, this was something I was looking forward to. Nick Carter graced Calgary with his presence at Cowboys on Friday night, and what a night it was. The venue was packed with eager fans all clutching the posters from their teenage bedroom walls hoping to get a glimpse of the blonde haired heartthrob. Nick hit the stage with the roar of screams and hundreds of outstretched arms reaching to maybe get just a touch of the pop icon. With dance moves still as flawless as they were in the 90’s, okay possibly even better, he worked the stage like the veteran he is. Nick had no problem working the crowd up by getting so close that he was actually sweating on them, and shaking his rather ageless booty. He even performed some of everyone’s favourite Backstreet Boys songs like “I want it that way” and “Everybody (backstreets back)” and he did it incredibly well solo. And speaking of solo, have you heard his solo music? It’s unbelievably awesome! With tracks like “Tijauna” “All American” (which he fittingly changed to “All Canadian”, and “Get Over Me”, which features Canadian Avril Lavigne on his record All American, the set list was a perfect mix of new energy and old favourites. He even threw in a few covers like Oasis’ “Wonderwall” Nick Carter sure did not disappoint and proved that he most definitely still has it goin on!
