Prince George, BC based alt-rock duo, The Statistics is made up of brothers, Darby & Erin Yule. I had the chance to chat with them for our segment, Five Questions With! Keep an eye on these guys, as they are set to release their new EP in 2017!

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

Darby: I’m Darby and this is my brother Erin. We form an Alternative Rock duo called The Statistics. We come from a small logging town in northern BC called Prince George. We are also widely know as the only people in the world who do not have some form of the phrase “Looking for adventure buddies” on our Tinder profiles.

Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.

Darby: We always explain our style as “Alternative rock with the soul of your Grandpa’s old 45 records”. In other words, we think Rock and Alternative music should be epic and soulful at the same time. This doesn’t mean that we are a throwback band though. Erin and I grew up playing Punk and Ska for years so we have some of those influences as well. We still push boundaries though. In our new song “Old Habits”, we started to dive into a more Alt-Country vibe. As a writer, it was really interesting for me to see how that particular sound really played off of our own sound.

Do you have any upcoming shows? For someone who has yet to see you live, how would you explain your live performance?

Erin:  We’re playing a bunch of shows in Toronto this week for IndieWeek. Our live performance is super high-energy. We jump. We yell. We generally do things that would probably be frowned upon in polite company. Like Darby said, we originally started playing punk and ska and that comes out really clearly in our show. We really try and get the audience as excited about being there as we are. We don’t think that you really see stage shows like ours anymore.

If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?

Darby: Well I think Old Habits would be the one to hear. It’s not only our newest one, it’s also showing the direction our music is headed.

Erin: I personally like Mission Hill. I think it’s the most indicative of what our sound is and where it’s going. It also is about something extremely close to my heart.

Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/ artists?

Darby: Matthew Good has always been and always will be my favourite Canadian artist. I listen to all sorts of Canadian talent though. I’ve just loved Matthew Good since I was a teenager.

Erin:  I love Mother Mother, City and Colour, Hey Ocean! and Peter Katz. Is Taylor Swift Canadian? Cause I have a huge crush on her.
