Interview – Gabriela Geneva

Gabriela Geneva is a Vancouver based solo artist ready to take the Canadian pop music scene by storm. Gabriela was born in Bulgaria and spent some time living in Europe before landing in the west coast at the age of 15. She has a single out entitled “In The Dark” that we had the chance to ask about. Gabriela will also be opening for popular Canadian artist Ria Mae at the Red River Ex on June 18th. Canadian Beats had a chance to catch up with Gabriela to chat life and music.

Tell me about your song writing process, what inspires you?

My songwriting process changes all the time. When I was writing my new single “In The Dark” it started with the lyrics, and then we brought in the music and built it up. That was the case with my first single “Tornado” as well. Other times though I’ll be inspired by a melody line, or a beat. Subject matter inspiration comes from my own personal life experiences as well as the people around me.

What made you decide to pursue music as a career? If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing?

I have always always loved music, but it was never really a realistic career path until my family and I moved to Canada. I never thought I’d be able to actually pursue it seriously but I am so grateful and so blessed to now have that opportunity. I don’t take it for granted.
If I were to pursue another field it would be art. Whether that be digital or traditional media, it would be art. I love to draw.

Tell me about your single “In The Dark”, what do you want people to take away from it?

In the dark is very special to me because I definitely have a hard time being vulnerable sometimes, and I like to think that I’m a fairly strong person, and I get to express both strength and vulnerability in this song. I love that. The song is about knowing that the one you love is in love with someone else but you want them to convince you that your relationship is not falling apart. You want them to lie to you well enough so that you don’t have to acknowledge the hurt. I think there’s a lot of strength in that.

Speaking of “In The Dark”, is there a personal experience attached to the story of the song?

This is one of the songs which was mostly inspired by someone else’s story though I do draw a certain aspect of it from my own experience.

What can we expect next from Gabriela Geneva? Full length? Tour?

Next you can expect more and more music! I have a lot of songs lined up to show everyone, and as for what sort of format they’ll be in, I haven’t decided. But they will be with you 🙂 Soon and consistently. Touring is something I have always loved so you can definitely expect that as well. Eastern Canada will be seeing a lot of me this summer at the Red River Ex and the Queen City Ex!

Here at Canadian Beats we like the include a “just for fun” portion to help your fans get to know you better, ready?….

I’d you could play music with anyone dead or alive, who would it be and why?

I would die if I got to perform with Jessie J and Michael Jackson. <3 To me, they are just perfection.

If you could say you wrote any song in history, what song would you pick and why?

Definitely something from MJ, again. It’s almost impossible to pick one but maybe Billie Jean, or They Don’t Care About Us.

What is your favourite place to travel and why?

I LOVE Europe. I love everything about it – the culture, the food, the people, the history, the architecture <3 #Rrepresent

What was the last book you read?

I read a lot, so I can’t remember the last one I read, but I am currently reading two books haha. “Me Before You” and re-reading Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

What is most played on your personal playlist?

Ariana Grande, Anne-Marie, and Fifth Harmony

And last but not least, is there anything you would like to say to your fans and supporters?

I just want to thank them once again for all the love and support they’ve always given me. I always strive to give the best of myself in my music and everything I do, and I am so happy when it’s well received <3 Thank you all xoxo
