Show Review – Lights

By: Jordyn Meade-Baxter

When: October 20, 2014
Where: Capital Exhibit Centre, Fredericton, NB

Monday night, as part of the Little Machines Tour, Lights made a stop in Fredericton. This was the third time she has been in the city, once in 2012 with Nightbox and another time with Tegan and Sara in 2010. Opening for Lights was the American trio, Rush Midnight.

Although Rush Midnight isn’t Canadian, I figured they were worth a mention. I hadn’t heard of them before the show, so I wasn’t used to their music. I had no idea what to expect but I really enjoyed what I heard. Their music is really calm, and I love the sound they have going for them. Plus, the matching outfits were cute.

Where this was my third time seeing Lights play, I already knew I was in for a great set. She opened up with her song “Muscle Memory” and that made everyone happy. There was a great mix of her newer stuff that I was just still getting used to and old favourites. The crowd got very excited as she played songs like “Siberia” and “Toes”.

Lights also did her piano set and played a song she hadn’t played in a long time –“Drive My Soul”. She looked into the crowd as the songs were sung back to her and smiled. That is honestly one of my favourite parts of going to concerts; seeing the artists just as happy as I was.

Because of this being a tour to promote her new album, Little Machines, quite a few of the songs she played were from the album. I was really happy to hear some of my favourites from it. She played “Running With the Boys” (a big crowd pleaser) and lead single “Up We Go”. She also closed the show after a loud encore request from the fans. The song was “Oil and Water”, also off her new album.

If you have yet to see Lights play, get on it as soon as possible. She will not disappoint. There are a few more Canadian stops left on her tour, so take your chance while you can!
