Melodic Death Metal band from Winnipeg, Laika, released their newest album “Somnia” on September 30th. This is the first one since their previous release and mini hiatus in 2010. These guys spent two years perfecting this album, and those two years did not go to waste.

Something that is unusual and unique about this album is their opener. I’m always a sucker for a good album opener and closer but this one in particular stuck out to me. For a death metal band, you would expect some kind of insane bang as an introduction; however Laika opens with “The Reckless Mind”. It is a melodic piano driven piece and definitely a good way to kick starts the album. I found it an absolutely beautiful song.

Their title song, “Somnia” was my next favourite. The bass and vocals were the two things to stand out to me the most. The entire album is driven very well by the bass they have in the music. This is prominent in a few other songs, mainly in the song “Fidelity” – another one to add to the list of favourites from this album. Their melodic side is once again brought out in the song “Dream Of Nothing”, which also opens with a piano and drum piece.

Add this album to your playlist if you are in to any type of metal, or looking for something a little different, but still awesome.
